The work of a secretary

I am pleased to share with you a short article I wrote on May 17, 1988, while I was attending to the English for Secretaries course in São Paulo (SP), at Associação Alumni.   To be a successful secretary   To be a successful secretary was the main goal I have set up for my professional career since the first day I have started working twelve-years ago.   Working for a top executive of a large and well-known corporation and being the “right arm”, as we secretaries used to say, of such a boss, were, according to my point of view, synonyms of being a well-succeeded secretary.   I believe that we should have satisfaction in whatever we do. To get real satisfaction out of doing anything, we need to do it well. To achieve the successfulness in a professional activity we should do always the best job for the company we are working for.   I am happy because I am quite sure that I did it well as a secretary so far despite the ups and downs of every career. But, I feel that

Letter writing: job application letter

Professional executive secretaries, here you have an example of a job application letter which I wrote in 1998 to help a friend in getting a new job.     Attention to the Manager of Recruitment and Placement   Dear Sir,   I understand you are looking for an Executive Secretary. I have eleven years of secretarial experience and can provide good experience. I´m 32 years old and married.   For the past seven years I´m been working as secretary for the (name of the company). My reason for wanting to leave my present position as executive secretary   to the Vice President of Foreign Operation of (name of the company) is that, after seven very happy years, I can see no prospect of real challenge or job development beyond my present level.   Enclosed is a brief history of my education and job experience.   I would appreciate getting together and discuss in more detail what I can offer as an executive secretary. I am looking forward to hearing from you.   Sinc

Autumn days

Welcome to you , rich Autumn days, Ere comes the cold, leaf-picking wind; When golden stocks are seen in fields, All standing arm-in-arm entwined; And gallons of sweet cider seen On trees in apples red and green.   With mellow pears that cheat our teeth, Which melt that tongues may suck them in; With blue-black damsons, yellow plums, And   woodnuts rich, to make us go Into the loneliest lanes we know.                               (W. Business etiquette

“Life at the workplace may not feel like an exam until the week when performance reviews are handed out or the specter of an ax suddenly appears. Yet the fact remains, we are being tested on a daily basis on something that we never studied and never realized was important: business etiquette. These tests happen in all sort of strange rooms too, such as elevators, office kitchens, and cubicles, not to mention boardrooms and client conference rooms.”   Written by: Vicky Oliver, in 301 smart answers to tough business etiquette questions, 2010.
